Pulling up to my parents' house, I parked the truck in front of the small yellow cottage. It wasn't much, but it had been our home my whole life. My parents were practical people and hard workers. My dad had put his entire life into the hardware store and expected us to follow. Gavin had disappointed them time after time, leaving the weight to fulfill his dreams solely on me, regardless of how I felt. Some days, it felt like I’d never get out from under the weight of his plan.

Zel squeezed my hand, bringing me back to the present. The day had been incredible, and I'd never had so much fun with anyone, but especially a girl. We enjoyed cupcakes from the bakery, tossed pennies into the fountain, and walked among the street vendors in Once Upon A Time town square. Just holding hands and laughing the whole day made it the perfect date.

"You sure about this? My family can be intense."

"If I'm with you, I am."

"You might change your mind after meeting my family. Come on, let's get this over with so we can get to the fun part of our date."

"I don't know, Nols. It's been pretty amazing so far."

Lifting her down from the truck, I kept a hold of her waist. "Yeah, it has." Dropping a kiss to her lips, I couldn’t resist pressing her up against the side of the truck. I regretted it a few minutes later when it was pure torture to pull away. The fear of my parents catching us had me stopping. No matter how old you were, the thought of your parents finding you in that state seemed to curb any desire, or at least it did with my parents.

Zel's lips were swollen, her face flushed, and I puffed up my chest at the sight. I hadn't forgotten Max’s mention of the bouncer dude earlier, but I was waiting to hear from her what was going on there before I assumed. Besides, I didn't want to ruin my day with her thinking of another guy. Linking my fingers, I pulled her along, the yellow dress fluttering around her legs as she walked.

She looked like a ray of sunshine in that dress. It was comical to me she thought I was the sunshine one when she radiated the sun herself. Stopping at the front door, the weather-beaten wreath with our family names on it hit me with a wave of sadness I hadn't expected. How many times have I seen it there and never once flinched? But today, it hurt as I thought of what it represented. Clearing my throat, I hoped she wouldn't ask who all the names were. It was getting shoved over to the column of things to talk about later.

Ringing the doorbell, we waited for someone to answer. I could've opened it myself, but it felt weird not living here anymore just to walk in. A few seconds later, my mother opened the door, her pumpkin and apple smell wrapping around me like a warm hug.
